A large number of UK mobile and broadband providers are planning huge increases for their existing customers for 2023 in line with the recent Consumer Price Index (CPI). What is the Consumer Price Index (CPI)
The Consumer Price Index is an important economic metric and is one of the most popular measures of inflation and deflation. It measures the average change in prices paid by consumers over a period of time for a basket of goods and services.
The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 8.8% in the 12 months to January 2023 (GOV).
What does this mean for you?
Many companies, in particular mobile phone, broadband and TV providers use the CPI to alter their own prices in annual increases and millions of companies will be hit by price hikes of up to 17.3% from this spring.
If you are a BT, EE, Vodafone, Virgin Media, O2 or TalkTalk customer, you can expect to see a price increase that equates to this CPI. Many firms are set to increase prices even further, with some adding up to 3.9% on top of the official rate.
These prices are also cumulative, so if you are on a two or three year contract, the 2023 increase will be added on top of the 2022 price rise.
